Venetian Design – part 3

15 Nov

Anyone who’s ever spent time in Venice would be very familiar with the popularity of masks.  Carnival in Venice is one of the city’s biggest events of the year so it stands to reason that tourist gift shops would feature masks as prominently as they do.

I can’t say that I found much cohesion to the design of Venetian masks outside of the fact that they’re a lot more sophisticated than your average Halloween mask. And in my humble opinion, even the beautiful ones are hauntingly scary.  But maybe that’s just because I can’t get this movie out of my head, Don’t Look Now.  It’s a movie with Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie from 1973 and I was silly enough to sneak a peek of it while my parents were watching it when I was a kid.  I was sitting on the stairs when I was supposed to be in bed and I’ve had nightmares about this move ever since (but I’m a wimp!).
