“Tarting up” a shelf

4 Jan

I’ve seen a lot of design-challenged shelves — particularly in dorms and apartments.  The French are oh-so-good at adding little embellishments to furniture to add that little bit of warmth.  One trick, in particular, that I love is shelf trim and shelf skirts.  Both are fairly easy to do and can make a plain shelf look immensely better and/or tie in a shelf with the color and decor of the rest of your room.  For shelf trim, you can use notions, ribbon and trimming from a fabric shop, or, my personal favorite — paper.  It doesn’t have to be fancy and you can use upholstery tacks or hot glue to put it on.
