Hawaiian Quilts

10 Feb

Hawaii is one of my all-time favorite spots in the world.  It’s one of the few spots that I’ve gone back to many times.  I know all you left coasters get to go there often but it was quite a feat from Boston and would be a big trek if I decided to go from here in Dublin.  But I digress…

The first time I was there was in 1989 on a family trip and I remember
being impressed by the simplicity of Hawaiian quilts (and this was before my mother even began quilting — she’s a late bloomer). I love the symmetry of the pattern and whenever I see this pattern today, it takes me back there immediately.

As you can tell from the photos, the pattern of the Hawaiian quilts is pretty similar and dominated by one, appliquéd motif — usually botanical designs.  The color palette of these quilts is usually limited to two colors — typically one bold and the other muted.

Both of these examples are softer in color than what you might normally see but I think bringing it down a notch makes them more relevant in design today. Perfect for my future beach house…

I agree, Amy! I really love the second one. The first is hard to see on the Blackberry. I would really like to make Lyric a quilt for Christmas. Just can’t figure out a theme or colors yet.
