The killer combo of exposed brick and tin ceilings

1 Sep

I have always loved the combination of exposed brick and tin ceilings — a classic Victorian look if you’re going for more rustic charm.  I recently was watching an old episode of HGTV’s Design Star and Tori used a great technique of using the tin ceiling tiles on a kitchen backsplash because it was cheap, easy and fast (critical for Design Star challenges).

When I was out in Montrose, Colorado this summer with my folks and Molly as we were headed to the airport, we stopped for lunch in the Great Harvest (yum, yum).  They had a terrific style to their cafe — very fitting for the downtown feel in Montrose which is pretty rustic. Here are some not great quality photos that I took on my phone…

And finally…the Denver Zoo

21 Aug

I thought about including the photos from the Denver Zoo in my recent “Critters” post but then I thought someone might skim the post and think that elephants are running amok in the Rocky Mountains.  On our drive down from Estes Park to Trout Lake, we decided to stop off at the Denver Zoo on a very HOT Sunday afternoon and check out the creatures there.  It was a whirlwind visit and midday on a hot day isn’t the best time to catch lively and engaged animals but we enjoyed our visit nonetheless.  One of my favorite creatures was the baby Orangutan – he was hard to capture with the camera so pardon the fuzziness of the photo.

Summer Meanderings – Part 4 “Flora”

20 Aug

I remember being on a tour of the rain forest in Australia and giggling like a schoolgirl at the way the guide pronounced and kept saying “flora and fauna”.  Since I’ve shared the “fauna” already, I thought I’d share a bit of the “flora” from my recent trip. Bored yet?

Summer Meanderings – Part 2 “People”

18 Aug

It was great getting to catch up with both family and friends out in Colorado.  This doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of all the photos that were taken during the visit but I thought I’d share some of my favorites.  There was lots of activity everywhere including whitewater rafting, paintball, frisbee, hiking, paddle boarding (not even sure it that’s what it’s called) and, one of my favorites is the expression on my parent’s and R’s faces as they headed down the gondola into Telluride.

Summer Meanderings – Part 1 “Views”

17 Aug

I had the good fortune of making it out to Colorado recently to celebrate my parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary with them. We headed down to the beautiful spot where Molly lives in the San Juan mountains.  I thought I’d share a few of my favorite pics from the visit over the next couple of days.

Today, I’m focusing on the views immediately outside Molly’s windows as well as the view looking back toward her house with the mountains reflecting. I also loved the little run-down cabin next door.
