Paper Accordion Lanterns

25 Sep

I love the look of the paper accordion lanterns I found on Etsy.   They’re such a cute and easy way to decorate any room but especially a nursery or a child’s room.  And of course, they’d be great for a special occasion.

I thought I’d share some other photos of these simple lanterns in place for more inspiration.  You can buy the lanterns on from Martha Stewart Crafts.

Some great life lessons

28 Aug

I’ve written before about typographic posters which continue to be a very hot trend.  There’s a lot of them out there which double as learning tools as well – like the typographic maps mentioned in a previous post.  This particular typographic poster offers a bit of learning as well, but this time in life lessons.  It’s called Family Rules and it’s from the Etsy Shop “ILoveItAll”.   I have a sneaky suspicion my mother might have written this one – especially the “hug often” part.

Awkward on Etsy

30 Jun

Found this cute little one-man shop on Etsy called Awkward which designs and sells clothing and accessories – mostly handknits.  I thought these little wool jellyfish were just adorable and a great accessory for a nursery or playroom.

Bolster pillows

15 Apr

If you’ve got a drab or lifeless sofa or bed, one of my favorite tricks to liven it up is to add a bolster pillow.  It’s a lot sleeker than having a ton of pillows (one recommended at a time — not three as in this photo) and they are great for adding pattern or disguising flaws.

There are lots of great resources on Etsy for bolster pillows including Independent Reign:  http://www.etsy.com/shop/IndependentReign

A sassy little pillow company

1 Apr

It is not a very well kept secret that I like quirky pillows and cushions –( https://tillyscottage.wordpress.com/2010/08/08/scrabble-anyone/ )  which is why I was so drawn to these little cuties from Alexandra Ferguson — love the attitude and isn’t it easier to let a pillow speak for you at times?  I’m guessing my mother will like these, too!  Particularly the “Call Your Mother” version.

28 Mar

About eight hours after this post goes live there will be a howl of laughter in West Texas when my mother wakes up and reads this post. You see, I went through a really big owl phase — I loved them and their huge inquisitive eyes.  I just thought they were beautiful creatures and so I started collecting them for my bedroom.  Then, it seemed like every birthday and Christmas, all I was getting were owl-y things and so I swore off owls, packed them up in a box and either sold them at a yard sale or gave them away to Goodwill in favor of a new Laura Ashley-styled bedroom. But now I want them back.

There are so many cute owl designs at them moment and it’s such a popular look — all my little owls would have fit in so well with this — what was I thinking?  I could have been the trendiest person in Dublin if I still had them…oh well.

If you’re looking to re-visit this design approach yourself, lots of great stuff available on Etsy. http://www.etsy.com

Fabric wall stickers from Mae

27 Mar

These are very adorable and great way for changeable decor — or again, for an apartment (why didn’t I know about all these ideas all those years I was living in apartments??). Australian design company, Mae, brings us this original range of reusable fabric stickers.  They won’t damage your walls, they’re made from recycled materials wherever possible and they’re super cute.  They have a store on Etsy in US dollars or check out their site (prices posted are in Aussie Dollars).

Letterpress Bunting

13 Dec

Here’s a fun little Christmas decor idea — some easy-to-make bunting using vintage images available  from Hello Handmade http://www.etsy.com/shop/hellohandmadepaperie

Last year, Molly and I made a similar bunting for Jessica’s baby shower. We scanned a swatch of the striped fabric that Jess was using for the nursery and then added a letter in Photoshop to each flag saying “Great Expectations” (which we thought was oh so clever given that Jessica and I became friends through the bookclub). It turned out very cute but sadly, I didn’t take a picture of it.  But bunting and papercraft are such a fun and easy way to spiff up the house for Christmas.

Wall stickers on Etsy

10 Oct

I saw these wall stickers on Etsy and thought they looked great.  At times, I think wall stickers look tacky (sorry!). I’m not big into the sayings on the walls and that sort of thing.  But I have seen a few lately that I think are pretty great.  Once again, a really great way to inexpensively decorate an apartment or dorm room without damaging the walls.  Also great for the nursery where you want to add something whimsical but want some flexibility once your child starts to get older.

For these particular wall stickers, I was thinking they would be great in a small entry alcove.  I could easily see these surrounding a wall-mounted coat hook and it could be a nice look in a small space.

An elegant return address

I don’t have much to say about this other than it’s way cool.  Gotta’ get me one of these…
